BenQ W500 720p Home Entertainment Projector , White

Product Description

The W500 features an iris-like lens design that mimics our own eye, adjusting the aperture after analyzing the incoming video signal. The aperture is contracted during dark scenes for truer black tones and enhanced detail, while it is enlarged for bright scenes to maximize light output and enable a wider dynamic range. No matter what type of content is on, the W500 ensures that you get the very best viewing experience. The W500 not only converts SD content such as analog TV broadcasts to HD-quality video, but it analyzes an amazing 1,024 pixels in the source for each pixel in the final HD version for native HD-like picture quality. The W500 analyzes multiple frames in source video to identify and then eliminate pixels giving rise to visual noise, and also corrects for distortions resulting from too much compression.Sophisticated Multi-Dimensional Diagonal Filtering (MDDF) technology smoothes away the "jaggies" that crop up along the edges of moving objects-even those lying at shallow angles of 5 to 7 while regular filters can only handle larger angles from 30 to 45.The W500 achieves greater color accuracy by handling each color signal in the video input individually, applying its brightness value directly in rendering the video. In contrast, regular projectors use a sampling process, which inevitably results in a loss of information about specific color signals and color distortion in the final projection image. The W500 gives you access to both newer digital and traditional analog video formats with its wide range of connection interfaces. You don't have miss out on any of the fun.

AWESOME5
I do not know what the low rating people voted this projector so low for! Just because of one miserable problem they consider the whole company is at fault. BenQ is known for their awesome customer service. Back to this projector though, it's outstanding. Tweak everything to your liking with it's awesome menu especially for colors. With HDMI and 2 Components and a D-SUB what more is there to ask? HQV does an outstanding effect on SD content (DVD, most computer medias, tv channels) and above and beyond on HD format. Economy mode makes it decently quiet. Add in a 5.1 home theater system and everything is great. This is an excellent 720p projector and not to mention the bulb price isn't more than half of the known 720p projector such as Mitsubishi HC1500 or Panasonic PX200AU.

Exceeding my Expectations5
I thought about a projector for a long time and finally decided upon this one based on it's lens-shifting capabilities (I was also looking at the Mitsubishi 1500). I have a low ceiling and thought that the Misubishi's fixed lens might be difficult to use properly. This is my first projector and I've logged ~50 hours so far between games, movies, and general computer usage. It has far exceeded all my expectations.

Setup was simple. I took it out of the box, plugged it in, shut the lights off, and turned it on. I then was able to focus, zoom, and shift as appropriate with ease. I'm currently running this with an image just shy of 120" on a wood textured gray wall which I thought would be terrible for projecting on and it looks excellent. I can't wait to mount it permanently and get a screen which I would bet will enhance the experience that much more. I'll probably update later with pictures and further thoughts.

The only con I can think of currently is that it only has 1 HDMI port. But I knew that going in and there's all sorts of methods to work around that. After reading the few reviews on Amazon I kind of think they are written by people who are reviewing this based on its specs, without actually having seen or used the projector.

In short this projector has done nothing but impress me from the first minute and I can only hope that it will continue to do so. All my friends and relatives who have seen it so far are in awe, and several are now considering purchasing a projector. This is an excellent entry-level high def projector with a ton of features for a great price.

If you're like me and you have been looking at this projector for a while and have been hesitant, do yourself a favor and buy it. It's doing everything I had hoped it would do and more.

Pros and Cons?2
Pros:
1. Great Contrast.
2. One of the least expensive projectors with lens shift.

Cons:
1. Not the brightest projector out there.
2. Only has a 2000 hour bulb.

Consider the Mitsubishi HC1500 or the Panasonic PT-AX200 instead and be sure to read my reviews on them too.

Hope this helps get your RealHomeTheaters off the ground!

Great Monitor for the price5
While it is the almost certainly the best monitor you can get for the price, it's also just a pretty darn good monitor.

In the past I've generally gone with either Sony or ViewSonic monitors, which have always delivered great quality but have also been a bit on the pricey side. After getting a couple of recommendations from friends who have purchased this monitor, as well as reading a positive review on Ars Technica, I decided to order one for myself when my 3-year old 19" ViewSonic LCD just wasn't cutting it any more.

I wasn't let down. The 1920x1200 resolution on the 24" screen gives you plenty of desktop real estate -- even with Vista's sidebar enabled, if you're into that kind of thing ;). The colors are sharp and the pixel response times are great. If you're a gamer, I haven't seen any ghosting or blurring what-so-ever. The "black" is pretty dark -- not "True Black", but darker than my ViewSonic is and plenty adequate.

Connection options are aplenty as well, with a choice between VGA, HDMI, and DVI-D.

The only real drawback I can think of is that the stand, while adequate, is a bit flimsy. Unless your desk is getting constantly bumped or you keep the monitor on a shaky surface for some reason, this shouldn't be an issue.

One of the Best LCD's and full of connections5
First of, people talk about TN panels as if it were a weakness.
It is not. The only negative thing I keep on hearing is that TN panels suffer from poor viewing angles. However, there's only one angle and that's in front of me.
Having said that the packaging on the item is simple, plastic wrap, foam padding on the corners and the box.
I, like the previous reviewer, had a 19"inch. I had a 21ms, 4:3 Samsung 910T.
Now going from 19" to 24" WD is amazing. The refresh rate alone is great for gaming. 2ms to 5ms.
The 1:1 Ratio is truly do able (check your video card for it might be disabled)
The stand wobbles a bit if you bump into it. Just make sure when you move the LCD to make sure you do it properly.
The Monitor Offers 3 ways to connect:
1. HDMI
2. DVI
3. VGA
So it can be a bit future proof (HDMI)

I've played TF (1920x1200)
Devil May Cry (1920x1200) 85mhz
Tom Clancy Vegas 2 (1920x1200)
Bioshock (1920x1200)
I've yet to experience ghosting of any form.

The only negative to this monitor/screen is the fact that it doesn't have a height adjuster. The only thing you can adjust is the up and down viewing angles.

Now on personal exp.
I still forget I have 5-6inches left of screen when I'm gaming.
I have to sit back at times to watch videos because of its size .
I got this for two ninety and it is worth every penny. I wish I had more $$ to get a dual screen going.

Excellent for a TN panel5
Overall, the monitor represents a good value. The TN panel has limited viewing angles. However, for a TN panel, the viewing angles are good. The backlight uniformity appears quite good. The colors seem fairly well calibrated out of the box.

Pros:
-Colors are fairly well calibrated out of the box
-Excellent value considering the quality compared to other TN panels
-My two monitors both came without discernable dead pixels

Cons:
-Still a TN panel (VA or particularly IPS panels usually have better viewing angles)
-No height adjustment in the base/stand
-Limited multi-media inputs but HDMI is sufficient for most needs

Search for reviews of the G2400W (the older model) for many rave reviews on tech sites.
